VANITAS / MEMENTO MORI
I created this series out of the plague of the 21st century. As with traditional Memento Mori or Vanitas tropes of the past, the imagery is steeped in death. Symbolism to remind the viewer of the inevitability of death and the transience of life. During the lockdowns in the early stages of the covid-19 outbreak I wanted a way to stay creative and practice my craft. I pulled my inspiration from paintings from the 17th - 19th centuries. Often these paintings included symbols such as the hour glass, skulls and bones or wilting flowers. This symbolism was there to force the viewer to confront the certainty of death and the futility of pleasure.
GARDEN of the DEAD
One of my favorite ways to spend a quiet day is to slowly wander through a cemetery. Reading the headstones, scrutinizing the carvings and observing the time-worn stone. I created this black & white fine art landscape series as a way to honor the stories, memories and sentiments of the world’s cemeteries, mausoleums and graveyards. Whenever I visit a cemetery I always have my camera, when photography is allowed that is. A lot of my inspiration for this series comes from Ansel Adams black & white landscapes. His work was ever-present in my childhood home.
BLOOD: REVITALIZED
I started this series in 2013 as a creative outlet for myself during a particularly difficult time in my life. I wanted to challenge myself artistically and create something unique. I combined the beauty of the human form with copious amounts of blood, something rarely seen outside of gratuitous horror movies. Creating a juxtaposition in the artwork that both elicits a sense of intrigue and simultaneously repels the viewer. Since its inception I have bent the original rules I laid out for myself to create new and exciting variations of the work, while maintaining its original intent and meaning.
